Bitcoin Long-Term Holder Economic Supply

What It Measures

Bitcoin Long-Term Holder Economic Supply shows how much of Bitcoin’s economic supply is currently held by long-term holders.

It answers the mirror image of the STH question:

How much BTC in the economic supply base is currently sitting with older holders rather than recent ones?

This is the absolute-value LTH series. It is expressed in satoshis.

Within the family:

  • Economic Supply is the total base,
  • LTH Economic Supply is the older-holder portion,
  • STH Economic Supply is the recent-holder portion.

This metric shows the size of long-term holder supply in native units rather than as a percentage share.

How To Use It

This metric is useful when the analytical focus is on older holder inventory in absolute BTC terms.

It helps answer questions such as:

  • How much BTC is currently held by long-term holders?
  • Is mature held supply growing or being drawn down?
  • Is the market retaining older supply, or releasing it into newer hands?

A rising LTH Economic Supply means more BTC is sitting inside the older-holder side of the economic supply base. That usually reflects supply aging in place rather than being reset through spending.

This metric is especially useful next to:

  • STH Economic Supply
  • LTH Economic Supply Share
  • Economic Supply Spread: Short-Term vs Long-Term Holders

What It Can Say About Price And Market Regime

LTH supply is often one of the clearest structural gauges of persistent holding behavior.

Rising LTH supply

When LTH supply rises, more BTC is sitting with older holders. That usually reflects a market where supply is aging rather than turning over quickly.

Falling LTH supply

When LTH supply declines, older-held inventory is being spent and reset into younger supply. That often matters most in stronger distribution phases or other periods when mature supply begins re-entering circulation.

Why the absolute version matters

The share chart tells you whether the old-holder side is becoming larger relative to the total. The sats chart tells you whether the old-holder inventory itself is actually increasing or decreasing.

That makes the absolute LTH series especially useful for reading the scale of dormant, mature supply.

Historical Background

Long-term holder supply became a central concept in Bitcoin on-chain research because mature supply behaves differently from recent supply. The absolute LTH series gives the cleanest direct view of how large that older-holder inventory is at any point in time.
